Salem staves off near miracle comeback bid by Dennis-Yarmouth

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 04:28:22 GMT

SALEM — It certainly was a lot more dramatic than Salem coach Matt Bouchard wanted, but in his program’s first-ever home playoff game, the Witches survived a nearly miraculous rally from Dennis-Yarmouth to escape Bertram Field with a 33-27 win.The Witches (7-2) advance to face No. 6 Cardinal Spellman in the Div. 6 quarterfinals next week.“We knew it was going to be a battle and it was. We were lucky to pull that one out,” Bouchard said.It looked like Salem was going to cruise into the second round when Devante Ozuna scored on a 27-yard run with 1:55 left to give his squad a 33-13 lead.Dolphins quarterback Jayden Barber, who was a brilliant playmaker all game, hit Oliver Doto for a 67-yard score on the next play to cut the lead to 33-20.Still, the Dolphins were in need of two scores in 94 seconds to steal the win away. They promptly recovered an onside kick before Barber hit Peyton Kellett for a 45-yard gain to the one.Two plays later, Barber (17 of 40, 259 yards) flipped one to Brys...

After Scituate (6-3) drew first blood on a 19-yard touchdown strike from Belsan to Lawson Foley, the Sailors watched their advantage evaporate, rapidly. Max Dressens broke off a 53-yard touchdown scamper 1:28 later, tying the score at 7-all. The schools would trade scores one more time, with Alex Burrill scampering for a five-yard touchdown for Scituate to cap the quarter. With 9:57 left in the first half, Wayland’s Michael Caulfield sprinted six yards for a touchdown, tying the score again at 14-14. Top-ranked Boston College men fend off UMass Lowell, 3-2

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 04:28:22 GMT

Lofty national rankings count for nada in the hardscrabble halls of Hockey East. The No. 1 ranked Boston College Eagles scored the game-winner early in the third period and outlasted unranked UMass Lowell, 3-2, in a schoolyard brawl on Friday night on Kelley Rink at Conte Forum.BC improved to 6-1 and 1-0 in its Hockey East debut while UML dropped to 4-3 and 1-2 in the opener of a home-and-home weekend series. The two teams will have at each other again on Saturday night at the Tsongas Center in Lowell.“Obviously it is nice to have that ranking but at the end of the day it doesn’t mean all that much in the sense every team is going to come out hard and Hockey East is a tough league,” said BC senior defenseman and team captain Eamon Powell. “Each and every weekend we know we are going to have a battle.”BC broke the 2-2 deadlock at 1:19 of the third with an unlikely collaboration between a pair of aligned blue-liners. Junior defenseman Aidan Hreschuk led hi...

Long distance! Wrongly measured 3-point line on Nuggets’ court fixed ahead of tipoff with Mavericks

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 04:28:22 GMT

DENVER (AP) — The 3-point shot of Dallas forward Grant Williams felt slightly off all morning in practice on the new, brightly painted Denver Nuggets court.Turns out, it wasn’t his shot at all. It was a wrongly measured 3-point line. The line’s curvature was painted too far back on the blue-and-yellow floor that Denver will use for the NBA’s In-season Tournament that made its debut Friday night. In the time between shootaround and the game between the Mavericks and Nuggets, the line was repainted to the right distance.“I’m like, ‘There’s no way this is supposed to be this far,’” Williams said of his morning shootaround. “Everything was short. Plus, I could just tell from the perception, either it was the blue court and it’s messing with my eyes in the empty arena, or this line is long.”Indeed, it was too far back.Williams went out in pregame warmups and he was back on target. He said there was still the faint remnant of the other 3-point mark.“You ...

'I Stand with Israel' signs vandalized in Skokie, police investigate as hate crime

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 04:28:22 GMT

SKOKIE, Ill. — Some Skokie residents posted 'I stand with Israel' signs in their front yards in the wake of the Oct. 7 attacks by Hamas. Those signs were vandalized Thursday night in what Skokie police are investigating as a hate crime."We are American citizens and we are Jewish and Israel is our home away from home, and we just put these signs up to show the world that we stand with Israel," said Leah Graber, Skokie resident. For the Graber family, they said the sign in their front yard is a symbol of love and peace. But it and others in their neighborhood were vandalized overnight — ripped out — some even torn to pieces. Leah’s kids noticed the damage when they left for school Friday morning."They saw it and they thought it was the wind and I knew, I knew it wasn’t the wind when I looked around and saw others had theirs taken away also," Graber said. "The antisemitism hits home."One of Graber's neighbors captured on their doorbell camera what appeared to be three vandals with sign...

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- An opossum made an appearance during the Texas Tech and Texas Christian football game where it ran across the field at Jones Stadium in Lubbock on Thursday. The little one was wrangled by stadium authorities before reaching the 20-yard line.Texas Tech University President Lawrence Schovanec was seen petting the marsupial earlier on Friday telling KXAN he is used to seeing them around his home."This will sound kind of weird, but there are a lot of opossums in our neighborhood and I've always fed them. I think when the creature is that homely and unattractive someone needs to love it," he said. "My wife thought it was disgusting and my son said 'I hope you sanitize your hands.' I did I wash them."The animal's special appearance turned out to be good luck for the Red Raiders who defeated TCU 35 to 28.
