NEW DELHI (AP) — Leaders of 17 Indian opposition parties agreed Friday to set aside their differences and put up a united fight in next year’s national election in an attempt to deny Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist party a third consecutive term. They said they plan to meet again next month to formulate a strategy for running joint candidates against the governing Bharatiya Janata Party’s nominees in constituencies across the country. That would prevent the BJP from benefitting from a splintering of votes among multiple opposition candidates.Nitish Kumar, an opposition leader and chief minister of eastern Bihar state, said the parties will work on a common manifesto stating their economic and other priorities.Rahul Gandhi, a key leader of the opposition Congress party, accused Modi of weakening the country’s democratic institutions and curbing freedom of speech.“We all stand united. We may have small differences, but we have decided to w...

The heat and its toll on your car

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Before you hit the road on a summer getaway, make a stop to check your car battery. The heat is incredibly hard on your vehicle battery, and AAA says it's also the season they see an uptick in tire blowouts.KXAN Traffic Anchor Erica Brennes sat down with AAA and has some advice before your next road trip."Joining me today is Daniel Armbruster with AAA. Daniel, let's talk about this heat. It is so brutal, and the toll it can take on our cars, specifically, our batteries, which is such a bummer when you get in your car and it won't start because you have a dead battery."Daniel: "Yeah, you know, Erica, batteries when it comes to heat, heat and vibration, our batteries worst enemy. And dead batteries are one of the top roadside calls that AAA sees during the summer. So this excessive heat that we're seeing really has the potential to drain your battery and cause a lot of issues internally. And of course, shorten the life of your battery. Supreme Court allows Biden policy to take effect focusing deportations on public safety risks

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 18:54:33 GMT

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court said Friday it will no longer stand in the way of a long-blocked Biden administration policy to prioritize the deportation of immigrants who are deemed to pose the greatest public safety risk or were picked up at the border. The justices rejected a challenge from some Republican-led states to a policy that, the administration said, recognizes that there is not enough money or manpower to deport all 11 million or so people who are in the United States illegally. The states had argued that federal immigration law requires authorities to detain and deport even those who pose little or no risk.At the center of the case is a September 2021 directive from the Department of Homeland Security that paused deportations unless individuals had committed acts of terrorism, espionage or “egregious threats to public safety.” The guidance, issued after Joe Biden became president, updated a Trump-era policy to remove people in the country illegall...

Human remains discovered in Hemet more than 30 years ago were determined to be those of a missing 4-year-old boy, authorities announced Thursday. On October 27, 1991, a quail hunter in a rural area near Florida Street and Greenspot Road located a human skull, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department stated in a news release.A search of the area also turned up a torn plastic trash bag that smelled of decomposition and contained clothing that appeared to belong to a child. An autopsy determined the skull was that of a child between 4 and 8 years old but the remains could not be identified at the time and the case went cold.Decades later the remains were sent to a DNA sequencing laboratory and in February of 2023, tests revealed that genetic relatives were alive in Houston, Texas. The relatives were contacted and gave consent for further DNA testing, which identified Patricia Clark as the boy's mother, the news release stated. Clark had reported her child, identified as Derrick B...
