Mets top Rockies behind Max Scherzer’s best start of the season DENVER — Max Scherzer has accomplished a lot in his 16-year, Hall-of-Fame-worthy career, but one of the few things that eluded him was a win at Coors Field.Scherzer (4-2) finally conquered that mountain Friday night in Denver, pitching the Mets to a 5-2 win in the first game of a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies. It was a vintage performance from the right-hander, who went seven innings for the first time this season in the win – his first in Colorado in six tries.Scherzer only allowed one earned run on six hits and struck out eight. He got 19 swings and misses and did not allow a walk, which was also a season-best mark. After a slow start to the season, a suspension and some nagging injuries, Scherzer has allowed only two earned runs over his last three starts. He’s looking a lot more like his old self.Ryan McMahon led off the second inning with a home run and Scherzer didn’t allow another hit until the fifth. He had runners on the corners in th...

U.S. weather movement slows due to “blocking pattern” aloft; rain-free high pressure locked in for Memorial Day weekend in Chicago with incoming high/mid-level clouds—temperatures cycling higher Mid-continent atmospheric blocking pattern is to stall major weather systems in place over the coming week setting the stage for a Memorial Day weekend of warming temps and rain-free weather in Chicago within a building dome of warm air. Day-to-day temp increases are in store here with highs flirting with 90-degrees Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next weekThe most important rule of thumb as ATMOSPHERIC BLOCKING PATTERNS come together is what’s happening across the central United States: the weather system in control as the blocking pattern gets underway is likely to stick around. Saints’ Tony Wolters will play wherever he’s needed

Saints’ Tony Wolters will play wherever he’s needed One of baseball’s oldest axioms — and one often tinged with humor — asserts that when a player is playing out of his usual position, the ball will find him.So when Saints catcher Tony Wolters took the field at second base on Thursday night, he knew what was coming. Saints manager Toby Gardenhire knew what was coming. And it happened with the first batter.Saints starter Aaron Sanchez got Omaha’s leadoff man to hit a soft, looping fly ball to the right of second. With the setting sun directly in his eyes, Wolters started back, took a couple steps in and made a lunging grab before the ball hit the ground.“I found it at the last second,” Wolters said.Meanwhile, in the dugout, Gardenhire and infield coach Tyler Smarslok were “dying laughing.”“I told Smars right before the pitch: ‘Watch, they’re going to hit a missile right to Tony and he’s going to screw it up,’ ” Gardenhire said. “But then the guy blooped it, which was almost worse.”The odyssey was only beginning. With two outs in the s...

Twins’ offense held mostly quiet in loss to Blue Jays Louie Varland did his job, limiting the potent Blue Jays offense to just three runs across his six innings of work. The bullpen — in this case Emilio Pagán and José De León — did its job, as well, throwing three scoreless innings after Varland’s departure to keep the team within striking distance. So, too, did the defense, cutting down a couple of runners trying to score. The offense?Well, it was another quiet day at the plate for the Twins, who, despite drawing nine walks, were unable to push runs across the plate. The Twins fell 3-1 to the Blue Jays on Friday night in the series opener at Target Field, finishing the day with just five hits.“It was kind of an odd game because we didn’t swing the bats that well, but we had some good at-bats,” manager Rocco Baldelli said. “We got late in some counts, laid off some pitches in the latter half of these at-bats. Had some guys on base. We’ve got to bring those guys around. We didn’t do that. But there was constant action.”Kyle Garlick drove...
