Carolina Hurricanes ride collective scoring into the East final of the NHL playoffs

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — It wasn’t long after the Carolina Hurricanes had closed out a second playoff opponent when defenseman Brent Burns began heaping praise on the team’s forwards for making it easy for the defensemen to jump into the offense. One of those forwards, Jesper Fast, sat to his right and couldn’t hold back. “Well,” Fast said, “you make it pretty easy for us as well.”The Hurricanes weren’t supposed to be able to do this: advancing in the playoffs after a series of injuries hit their forward group to sideline some of their most naturally talented goal-scorers. Yet the collective approach has worked so well that the Hurricanes are finding the net more frequently than they did in the regular season despite being down in bodies — and now has them in the Eastern Conference Final.“It’s really a five-man group,” Burns said after Thursday’s 3-2 overtime win in Game 5 to eliminate the New Jersey Devils. “We talk about that. FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — McDonald’s and a franchise holder are at fault after a hot Chicken McNugget from a Happy Meal fell on a little girl’s leg and caused second-degree burns, a jury in South Florida found in a case reminiscent of the famous hot coffee lawsuit of the 1990s.A second jury will determine how much McDonald’s USA and its franchise owner, Upchurch Foods, will pay the child and her mother, the South Florida SunSentinel reported.Thursday’s decision was split, with jurors finding the franchise holder liable for negligence and failure to warn customers about the risk of hot food, and McDonald’s USA liable for failing to provide instructions for safe handling of the food. McDonald’s USA was not found to be negligent, and the jury dismissed the argument that the product was defective.“Our sympathies go out to this family for what occurred in this unfortunate incident, as we hold customer safety as one of our highest priorities,” McDonald’s o...

Dexter Lawrence contract shows how new deals help Giants create cap space

Published Sun, 23 Feb 2025 19:33:49 GMT

Before signing his new contract, Giants defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence was due to count $12.4 million against this season’s salary cap. Now, thanks to Lawrence’s four-year extension, the Giants have lowered Lawrence’s 2023 cap hit to $6.653 million, per sources, freeing up more money that GM Joe Schoen can use to run the rest of his team this year. That’s because Lawrence’s extension, which puts him under contract through 2027, includes $22 million of his $59 million total guarantees as a signing bonus. This cap charge gets spread evenly through the five years of his new contract.A low $2.253 million base salary in 2023, plus the $4.4 million annual proration of his signing bonus, keeps Lawrence’s cost down in Year 1.This is the side benefit of signing a top player to a long-term deal, and it is why possible upcoming extensions for left tackle Andrew Thomas and running back Saquon Barkley could further help the Giants’ short-term cause.̶...

McDonald’s found liable for girl’s burns from chicken nuggets. Next up: Jury to determine how much company will pay

McDonald’s is to blame for not warning customers about the dangers of its overheated Chicken McNuggets, one of which fell on a little girl’s lap and left her with second-degree burns on her upper thigh in 2019, a Broward jury ruled Thursday.A second jury will be empaneled to decide just how much McDonald’s and its franchise operator will be ordered to pay.The jury’s decision came after two days of testimony and arguments about what happened to a 4-year-old girl in August 2019 and who was responsible. The girl’s mother, Philana Holmes, testified that she bought Happy Meals for her son and daughter at a Tamarac McDonald’s, receiving no warning that the food might be unusually hot. After receiving the food from the drive-thru window, Holmes said she handed the food to her daughter and son in the back seat and drove away. When a piece of chicken fell on her daughter’s leg, Holmes said she did not realize at first why her daughter was screaming. The girl, identified in court as Olivia, is...
