LOS ANGELES (AP) — Throughout his life, Paul Schrader has had a complicated relationship with Christianity. He grew up in a strict Calvinist home, went to a Christian college, left the faith and then eventually returned, albeit to a different denomination. And although he is widely branded with his religious roots, the screenwriter and director who rose to fame after writing “Taxi Driver” hardly fits the mold of a cliche believer. His stories often exploit the logical but worst possible outcomes of his characters’ spiraling depravity or despair. But Schrader’s faith always informs even his most profane films.“You can’t really outrun your original programming,” the 76-year-old said during a recent interview with The Associated Press. His latest movie, “Master Gardener,” which hits theaters Friday, is the final installment of the director’s “Man in a Room Trilogy,” something he freely concedes was more about marketing than an intentional connection between the three films.“Master G...Novak Djokovic loses to Holger Rune, again, this time at Italian Open

ROME (AP) — Twenty-year-old Danish player Holger Rune recorded his second victory over Novak Djokovic in little more than six months, beating the 22-time Grand Slam champion 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 Wednesday to reach the Italian Open semifinals.Rune, who also defeated Djokovic in the Paris Masters final in November, gave the Serb fits with his rapid court coverage. He made his opponent hit extra balls on points that Djokovic thought he had already finished off.“This is probably the coldest and wettest tournament I’ve ever played here in Rome,” Djokovic said. “In these kind of conditions, it’s very difficult to get the ball past him. He’s very, very fast, very quick. Great anticipation. Just a very talented, dynamic player, all-around player.“He was just better. He played too good for me for most part of the match,” Djokovic said. “He kept his nerves and deserved to win.”The 35-year-old Djokovic didn’t appear at his best physically early on and called for a trainer after holding for a 2-...Abogado clave de Trump, Tim Parlatore, abandona su equipo legal

WASHINGTON (AP) — An optimistic President Joe Biden declared Wednesday that he is confident the U.S. will avoid an unprecedented and potentially catastrophic debt default, saying talks with congressional Republicans have been productive as he prepared to leave for a global summit in Japan.Biden’s upbeat remarks came as a select group of negotiators began meeting to try and hammer out the final contours of a budget spending agreement to unlock a path forward for raising the debt limit by June 1. That is when the Treasury Department says the U.S. could begin defaulting on its obligations and trigger financial chaos.“I’m confident that we’ll get the agreement on the budget and America will not default,” the president said from the Roosevelt Room of the White House. LONDON — A U.K. government minister has apologized after POLITICO found she used House of Commons facilities to host a private dinner for a business group which donates money to her local party — without flagging her financial links.Energy Minister Amanda Solloway sponsored the event in June last year on behalf of Businessfore, an “unincorporated association” with ties to a City insurance firm. Businessfore had given £15,000 to her local Conservative grouping just six months earlier.House of Commons rules state that MPs using taxpayer-funded facilities are expected to declare any existing financial links with the groups they are hosting, and flag such events in advance with parliament’s standards watchdog. But while Solloway included the donation on the register of MPs’ interests, parliamentary records show she did not then highlight the connection when agreeing to host the dinner for Businessfore on the Westminster estate.Responding to a series of questions from POLITICO, Soll...Latest news
